Refresh Your Chemical Storage Safety Ready for Back To School

As the temperatures start to cool down (slightly) and lazy days around the swimming pool become a distant memory, thoughts turn to Back To School for parents, teachers and pupils. But if you're the person responsible for ensuring that your school has the best quality, safe chemical storage and handling equipment to keep staff and pupils out of harm, it might be time to think about a refresh. Why Safer Chemical Storage is Crucial in Schools  With the number of acid attacks in the UK doubling since 2012, safer storage of harmful chemicals in schools is moving up the agenda (Education in Chemistry report). The safe storage of chemicals and dangerous materials is important for schools and colleges not just to keep people out of danger, but also to avoid the theft of substances which may be used in the illegal manufacture of explosives and narcotics. Equally, with the rise in attacks using acids and other dangerous substance any organisation that uses and stores such materials is vulnerable to thefts. Implementing policies and procedures that deter theft and make access more difficult are crucial for any workplace where dangerous substances are stored and used. Government Guidelines on the Safer Storage of Chemicals in Schools Guidelines published by the government on the safer storage of materials to prevent theft can be found by clicking here. There are 2 key questions that the government suggests schools and colleges should consider in storing hazardous materials:
  • Is a full stock list available of which chemicals are being used, their quantities and where everything is stored?
  • Can bulk stock be isolated and locked away until it is required?
The main advice for schools, colleges and any educational environment that is using hazardous chemicals as part of curriculum is to follow these basic rules:
  • Have a clear policy for receiving, storing, handling and disposing of dangerous materials
  • Limit the number of colleagues who have access to dangerous materials to only those with a specific need to fulfil their job role
  • Keep the bulk volume of dangerous substances stored away from classrooms and areas which are easier for the general public to access and in a locked cabinet
  • Safely lock away all chemicals and dangerous materials in a good quality cabinet with a limited number of keys
  • Report any missing stock or damage to cabinets immediately following your agreed process
